WB Cabinet okays health insurance for underprivileged workers

Kolkata, Feb 18 (PTI) West Bengal Cabinet today approved group insurance scheme 'Swasthya Sathi', to cover the health requirements for a large section of volunteers and other workers engaged in various development programmes of the state government.

"Such employees do not have any health insurance yet. The state government has decided to cover these workers and volunteers under a comprehensive health insurance scheme named 'Swasthya Sathi' with effect from April 1 this year," Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said after the cabinet meeting.

The scheme would benefit about 80 lakh families covering around four crore people and the state government would provide Rs 1,000 crore per annum for it, she said.

The main features of the scheme include basic health cover up to Rs 1.5 lakh per annum, no cap on the size of the family and coverage for critical illness up to Rs 5 lakh.

It would cover all civic and green police volunteers, civil defence volunteers, disaster management workers, ASHA workers, SHGs, NVF and home guards and ICDS workers, besides other contractual, casual and daily rated workers under the state government, the Chief Minister said.
