58 new trains proposed in Rail Budget
The Government of West Bengal has inaugurated the unit 2 of the Purulia Pump Storage Project, which would be able to generate 900 MW power instantly by discharging stored water from upper dam to lower dam through reversible pump turbine and generation motor.
This project would help in stabilising grid frequency in the region, meeting pick hour demand instantly, improving plant load factor (PLF) of thermal power stations and also utilising surplus grid power to pump water from lower dam to upper dam at lean hours.
Prior to this, three other units—units 1, 3 and 4—were commissioned earlier, according to state government sources.
Inaugurating this project, the West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee lauded the Japan government and Japan Bank of International Cooperative (JBIC) for extending financial help to the tune of Rs 3,188 crore and technological output as well.
The Japanese companies like Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Toshiba and Marubani were heavily engaged to implement this project besides Indian counterparts like Bridge and Roof and Larsen & Tourbo, the Chief Minister informed.
He added that JBIC is also extending financial support for the disposal of waste in six municipalities in the state and for the implementation of East-West Metro Rail Project in Kolkata, which connects Salt Lake with Howrah station through a tunnel under Ganges.
The state Power Minister Mrinal Banerjee said that the Purulia power project would help to increase the ratio of hydel thermal power generation in the state at this moment.
Bhattacharjee emphasised for the immediate implementation of rural electrification, programme extended irrigation facilities, more primary and secondary schools and health centres in this district which could change the whole economic scenario of this district.
According to Banerjee, 4,000 MW would be required to implement the rural electrification project. While only thermal power station would not generate the huge quantity of power, the state government has to look for other sources including hydel power, he added.
Meanwhile, he also said that the state government has introduced the scheme under which 5,000 unemployed youth whose name have been registered with the Employment Exchange could receive training from Industrial Training Institutes, state government is giving 50 per cent grant for these trainees.
Japan Consul General said the Purulia project would care to protect environment in this region while implementing this hydel power project.
