Chandigarh: Punjab today became the first state in country to launch online national permit for Trucks and heavy vehicles as Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal handed over permits to truck operators within minutes of their filing application.

“Earlier obtaining national permit was a cumbersome as well as costly process with transporters being forced to shell out Rs 3,000 per state every year for the permit,” said Badal here today.

He added, “Punjabi transporters are the back bone of the country’s transport system and it was our duty to solve their problems on priority. I had moved the principal of ‘one country one permit’ and this national permit at a meager cost of Rs 15,000 would give freedom to the truck operator to operate his truck from Kashmir to Kanyakumari without any additional tax.”

National online permit scheme has been introduced in the state under a Central Act and it would be of a big help for Punjab transporters as their trucks go to different parts of the country to deliver various products and goods.

Besides Punjab government today also launched a unique SMS service to facilitate the truck drivers traveling all across the country.

“We have launched SMS service for the truck operators. This 24 X 7 SMS service would come to the aid of any truck operator who has been illegally stopped by any state authority in any part of the country.

An SMS by any truck operator would elicit an immediate reply by Punjab Transport Department confirming the authenticity of said truck permit,” stated Badal.

Reiterating the commitment of the government to computerise the total functioning of transport department by December 201, Badal said that 2011 would see total computerisation of the process of issuance of driving licence, registration of vehicles and online deposit of various dues of the department.
