Chandigarh: The public transport system in important cities of Punjab, including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Bathinda, Patiala and Mohali, is up for a massive overhaul.

The government has approved a Rs 6,600 crore plan to improve the transportation system in the cities with induction of metro network, mass rapid system, low-floor AC buses, radio cabs and radio autos within the next six months.

The government has approved a mega joint plan of the Local Government Department and the Transport Department to transform the public transport system in the state.

“Efficient and desirable public transportation system will reduce personal vehicles on the roads. Tenders for low-floor AC buses have already been floated. Similarly, the process is on to shortlist operators for starting radio cab and radio auto service in important towns,” a Transport Department official said.

He added, “These cabs and autos would be GPS controlled and will be available to passengers at a phone call. It will also help us to attract more foreign and domestic tourists to Punjab and availability of easy transport will facilitate their stay here.”

The Transport Department has also tied up with the Tourism Department to promote and facilitate tourism in the state.
