Guwahati: Assam now has two special medical laboratories—a healthcare laboratory and a molecular diagnostic laboratory, set up for taking up research project in the field of healthcare.

The State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently inaugurated the two laboratories at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GHMC) — the state’s biggest healthcare centre.

The laboratories sanctioned in 2009, were funded by the Biotechnology Department of the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.

The healthcare laboratory was opened at the Anatomy Department of the hospital while its Biochemistry Department got the molecular diagnostic laboratory.

The healthcare laboratory has facilities for tissue typing and transplant immunology — two major requirements for carrying out organ transplant procedures — and will also screen genetic diseases like ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes, among others.

The laboratory will also include facilities for research scholars willing to undertake studies in areas like cytogenetics, molecular genetics, biochemical genetics, immunogenetics, medical genetics and
development genetics.

It will have two components — one for patients and the other for research activities.

The molecular diagnostic laboratory, which will study genetic haematological (blood-related) diseases, will also encourage research along with screening of patients.

“The two laboratories will help us take more research projects by our doctors and medical students to pursue research,” Sarma said.

A senior official of the hospital said that the two special laboratories would help them to expand their scope of diagnostics and research in the field of molecular genetics in future.
