Rajiv Mehta to be D-G, Narcotics Control Bureau

An Indian Police Service officer belonging to the Assam cadre, his term will be for five years once he takes over from the current incumbent OPS Malik

Rajiv Mehta, IPS (Assam-Meghalaya, 1981) has been appointed as Director General, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

His appointment will be on deputation basis for a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or till the date of his superannuation or until further orders, whichever happens earlier.

He is currently serving as the Additional DG (Law and Order) in Meghalaya. An alumnus of St. Columba’s and St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, Mr. Mehta taught for two years at Lawrence School, Sanawar, before joining the Indian Police Service. He has also served in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) as an IG, as well as an advisor to the Indian mission in the European Economic Community in Brussels.

Mr. Mehta takes over from OPS Malik, a 1975-batch IPS officer of the UP cadre, who was appointed to the post in December 2008.

The NCB is a leading law enforcement and intelligence agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs, responsible for countering drug trafficking and illegal substances' abuse. The Director General of NCB is usually an officer of the Indian Police Service or the Indian Revenue Service.

It enables the implementation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and helps fight its violation through the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988.

The NCB is headquartered in New Delhi, with field units and zonal offices located in various states. Officers are drawn from thw IRS, and it is affiliated with the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.

It works in close cooperation with the the Directorate General of Income Tax Investigation, Customs and Central Excise, the CBI, the Central Economic Intelligence Bureau (CEIB) and other Indian intelligence and law enforcement agencies both at the national and state levels.
