New Delhi: India's Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday approved the promotion of Pulok Chatterji, a senior officer in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), to the post of secretary with effect from January 2, 2008. The 1974 Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer from Uttar Pradesh cadre earlier had stints in the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and as Officer on Special Duty to Congress president Sonia Gandhi when she was the leader of the opposition in 1999.  His responsibility in the PMO included deciding appointments of all civil servants above the rank of joint secretary. The ACC also approved handing over of additional charges of Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals to J S Sarma, a 1971-batch IAS officer belonging to the Andhra Pradesh cadre for a period of three months. Sarma is presently serving as the Secretary of the Department of Fertilisers in the same Ministry. —iGovernment Bureau
