Ranchi: All is not well with the revised list of the below poverty line (BPL) families in Jharkhand. This is how State Governor MOH Farook reacted to the conclusion of the four-month-long exercise of recasting the BPL list.

In pursuance to the hoarse cry from different parties, the State Government has early this year decided to revise the BPL. However, huge gap in escalation of BPL families in different districts has made the governor to doubt the authenticity of the count.

Subsequently, he asked the top bosses including Secretary of the Rural Development Department SK Satpati to re-check the data and prepare the qualified list for across the State.

Glaring irregularity in the revision of the BPL family list came to the fore when the Governor reviewed the final exercise. While Bokaro town witnessed sharp increase of 168 per cent in the BPL families vis--vis last exercise, Koderma has the lowest increase of about 4 per cent.

As per the last survey, Bokaro district has about 72,000 families below poverty line. However, after the revision, the number of families has swelled to more than 1.21 lakh. Koderma district, which had about 52,000 families, in contract, added just about 2,000 new families in the list of BPL.

Deputy Commissioner of Bokaro District, Satyendra Singh, however, justified the increase saying that the BPL families were undervalued.

“This time, we adopted a judicious approach to benefit the genuine families, so the list has increased,” Singh said, adding that he adhered to the 13-point guidelines issued by the State government in this regard.

Talking to the iGovernment, Rural Development Secretary SK Satpati said he was reviewing the exercise undertaken by all the districts for revision of the BPL list and will submit the report to Governor next week.
