ADB aid to improve civic amenities in Assam towns

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to extend a loan assistance of US $200 million to Assam, to be used for improving civic amenities in two major towns of Guwahati and Dibrugarh. A high level team of ADB led by Mission Leader Sengay Penjor on June 3 met Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi here and extended a loan assistance to the State.

Guwahati: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to extend a loan assistance of US $200 million to Assam, to be used for improving civic amenities in two major towns of Guwahati and Dibrugarh.

A high level team of ADB led by Mission Leader Sengay Penjor on June 3 met Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi here and extended a loan assistance to the State.

The whooping loan assistance for Guwahati will be for Bus Rapid Transit System to be introduced from Paltanbazar to Khanapara in the capital city and two other projects — drinking water supply and sewerage.

ADB’s assistance will also include solid waste management and drainage system for upper Assam town of Dibrugarh.

The schemes are likely to be completed in five years and municipal bodies are likely to be entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the schemes.

Officials at Guwahati Development Department said required water for the water supply scheme will be drawn from the Brahmaputra and a water treatment plant will be set up in the Sunsali area on the banks of the river.

At least seven to eight reservoirs will be constructed on elevated areas including the hillocks so that the advantage of the natural elevation can be utilized to ensure free flow of water to the households.
