Chandigarh: In the wake of recent jailbreak case in which eight dreaded criminals escaped from a jail in Sonepat, the Haryana government has decided to install highly efficient mobile jammers in all 19 jails of the state at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Financial Commissioner, Home Department, Sameer Mathur, with senior police officers of the state, including the Director General of Police (Prisons) recently.

As per the guidelines of the Department of Telecommunications, the Home Department recently approached the Bharat Electronics Limited and Electronics Corporation of India Limited. Both the companies have completed the survey and located the points for installation of jammers.

According to a senior police officer, the final plan of action has been submitted to Intelligence Bureau and Special Protection Group for clearance of installation of mobile jamming towers in and around jails.

“A few jails do have jammers but they are either outdated or have limited scope of functioning. Therefore, it has been decided to overhaul the entire mobile phone jamming system with introduction of latest jammers,” the officer added.

The Rs 10 crore projects will start from the jails in the National Capital Region. In the first phase, the eight jails in the NCR will be fitted with jammers. Then the same will be replicated in other jails of the state also.
