Ranchi: Grappling with the problems of delayed delivery of assigned Aadhaar numbers through India Post, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is now contemplating roping in private courier agencies to speed up delivery of Aadhaar numbers.

The UIDAI had an agreement with the DoP to collect and arrange delivery of Aadhaar cards to the persons enrolled. However, it has been observed that the post offices are unable to handle the huge load of identification cards and ensure their timely delivery.

UIDAI Director General-cum-Mission Director RS Sharma, who recently visited Jharkhand to launch integration of subsidy schemes with Aadhaar number operation, said the authority is seriously looking for reputed courier agencies with pan-India operation to share the responsibility of delivering UID cards.

Sources in the UIDAI said that the authority has already invited the expression of interest from reputed couriers to provide complete solution for dispatch and delivery of Aadhaar numbers.
“The issue would be shorted out in a month or two, after which the people enrolled, would not have to wait endlessly to get their assigned Aadhaar numbers,” an Assistant Director General of the Authority said.

Around one crore people, who consists about 40 per cent population, have been enrolled for UID numbers in Jharkhand alone. However, hardly 15-20 per cent of them could get the numbers issued by the Authority so far.

In an attempt to ease the postal delays, the UIDAI has launched special link on its website for facilitating download of digitised and authentic Aadhaar numbers. However, the system could not be made fully operational due to some technical snags.
