Kolkata: From next year, students enrolled in high schools of West Bengal will have the choice for opting for vocational streams in place of regular subjects.

Emboldened by the Centre’s emphasis on popularising vocational courses in high school, the West Bengal School Education Department has proposed introduction of vocational course in schools apart from the regular curriculum from the next academic session, 2013.

Till date, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE), which conducts the exams, has been conducting them in science, humanities and commerce streams.

“From 2013, we would be introducing vocational education as a stream at the higher secondary level and would call it ‘Kormoshikkha’. We have spoken to the WBCHSE,” Vikram Sen, Principal Secretary of the School Education Department, said.

The syllabus would be chalked out soon and the schools which can offer the curriculum would be chosen. The school education department would also have to think of teachers’ recruitment for this stream.

“The representatives of National Skill Development Corporation would be meeting us in this regard this month where we hope to find a solution,” Sen said.

Studying in the vocational stream of higher secondary would also mean lateral entry to polytechnic colleges. Technical Education Ministry has been told to frame the course of studies of vocational courses for high schools, so that it could enable the students get lateral entry in the polytechnic colleges.

In the new scheme of things, a student would be able choose a stream of subjects replacing the traditional subjects like physics or chemistry or be able to decide on studying a single vocational subject along with the traditional subjects.
