Assam launches health scheme for BPL patients

Assam will be launching a special scheme which will provide financial assistance for the treatment of life threatening diseases to BPL patients

 Guwahati: Assam government will soon launch a special scheme under which poor people will be provided financial assistance of Rs. 1.5 lakh for treatment of life threatening diseases.

The state health department will have an annual corpus fund of Rs. 4.5 crore for the project.

The special scheme will cover treatment of diseases like heart, cancer, kidney, urological, orthopaedics, haematological, bone marrow transplantation, AIDS, mental disease with surgical treatment and injuries caused due to bomb blasts, road, rail, industrial and agricultural accidents.

The project has been named as Assam Arogya Nidhi.

Officials in the health department said the scheme will be applicable for those whose monthly income is less than Rs. 10, 000 and will cater to treatment of diseases and injuries resulting from man-made or natural calamities.

“It is an innovative scheme by the state health and family welfare department and has been chalked out keeping in mind the fact that many poor people in the state either has to sell off their properties for treatment of life threatening diseases or injuries or they die as they can’t afford the cost of treatment,” the official said.

The official said the treatment under the scheme would be available in all the government hospitals and private hospitals empanelled by the government. The name of empanelled hospitals will be made public once the scheme starts functioning.

The application form for applying for the scheme will be available at the office of joint director of health and the district programme management unit of NRHM in each district.

“An applicant must have documents like medical examination/treatment report with the projected medical expense attested by the treating doctor, attested certificate of place of residence, income certificate attested by the deputy commissioner or sub-divisional officer or block development officers, besides others.
