First e-waste recycler registered with CPCB

Attero Recycling becomes first e-waste recycler in India to be approved by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)

New Delhi: Attero Recycling, India's only end-to-end electronic waste (e-waste) recycling company has become the first e-waste recycler to be registered with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of the Government of India.

"The registration for environmentally sound recycling of e-waste, given by the CPCB is in recognition of our commitment to the cause of the environment and of the capability of our company to handle such a large and imposing issue," Attero Recycling CEO Nitin Gupta said.

E-waste is now one of the fastest growing waste streams and the dangerous nature of it makes it imperative that we have an efficient mechanism in place for responsible recycling of it," Gupta added.

"The certification certainly makes our efforts towards environmentally sustainable e-waste management in India official. We hope many more socially responsible corporates will now come forward to avail our services and join us in our commitment to turn e-waste into e-good," Attero Recycling Chief Operating Officer Rohan Gupta said.

E-waste disposal in India has been a steadily growing concern among environmentally and socially conscious groups. Developing countries have traditionally been the dumping yard of hazardous wastes for developed companies.

Around 50,000 tonnes of e-waste comes to India annually through this exit door in the garb of reusable magnanimity and makes its way to the unsafe and unauthorised dumping yards where they are dismantled manually and unscientifically posing grave health and environment risks.

According to a Greenpeace Report, in 2007, India generated 380,000 tonnes of e-waste. Only three per cent of this made it to the authorised recyclers' facilities.

India's e-waste generation is growing at the rate of 15per cent and is expected to cross 800,000 tonne mark by 2012.

By 2015, 2 billion PCs are expected to invade our homes and our mobile subscriber base is expected to be about 450 million subscribers. The e-waste generated by just these two segments would be staggering," Gupta said.
