India mulls medical devices legislation

This step would help the government to standardise the quality of Indian manufactured medical devices and help the domestic medical equipment industry

New Delhi: The Government of India is working on a medical devices legislation, in order to standardise the quality of Indian manufactured medical devices, says Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Kapil Sibal.

"Most of the medical equipments in India are imported and medical devices industry in India has not grown much," the Minister said.

He was speaking at the 5th India Health Summit: Optimising Healthcare Delivery in India: A Patient Centric Approach, jointly organised here today by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Indian Healthcare Federation.

Sibal pointed out four key areas—greater R&D in the field of technology and genomics focussed on target drugging, vaccinations & innovative solutions, manufacturing and managing medical devices domestically, delivery of quality human resource and affordability—where the government should focus.

Speaking at the occasion, Apollo Hospitals Group Chairman Prathap C Reddy said, "We should look at innovative healthcare models, work on standard definition and working environment for PPP in order to fill the huge deficit for quality healthcare, which is inaccessible to many."

Highlighting on the aspects of corporate social responsibility, Max Hospitals Group Executive Medical Director stated, "Solutions to healthcare should follow a proximity approach, which are customised to the local community. Integrating research and technology aligning healthcare delivery should be given immense importance."
