Jawahar Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir now open 24x7

Jawahar Tunnel which was closed for traffic from midnight till 8 a.m for the last 18 years will now be open 24X7

Srinagar: The Jawahar Tunnel connecting India's Kashmir valley with the rest of the country would now remain open for traffic round the clock, officials said.

The move follows an order by the Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday that the 2.5-km long Jawahar Tunnel should be opened for two-way traffic round the clock from Tuesday.

The Jawahar Tunnel has remained closed for vehicular traffic from midnight till 8 a.m for the last 18 years.

The move would facilitate entry and exit of hundreds of vehicles carrying essential supplies to the valley and consignments of fruit from the valley to the markets in various cities in the rest of the country.
