More hostels for SC, ST, OBC students in Himachal

Himachal Pradesh will construct 37 more hostels across the state under 'Chhatrawas Yojna' for which the state government has sanctioned Rs 49.93 crore

Shimla: In an effort to facilitate students of SC, ST and OBC categories in pursuing their studies, Himachal Pradesh will construct 37 more hostels across the state under 'Chhatrawas Yojna' for which the state government has sanctioned Rs 49.93 crore.

Disclosing that 18 hostels have been already constructed, state Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Sarveen Chaudhary said that efforts were being made to create good academic atmosphere for students besides providing them hostel facilities.

She said that 15 hostels for SC boys and 17 hostels for girls of SC category and two hostels for OBC boys and three hostels for girls belonging to OBC category were being constructed under the scheme.

The Minister said that central government had started Babu Jagjeevan Ram Scholarship Scheme from January 1, 2008 for SC girl students and added that Rs 13.47 crore were proposed to be spent upon construction of eight hostels during the current financial year in the state.

Chaudhary said that proposal for constructing hostels at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Agriculture University, Palampur for 100 OBC boys and for 100 boys and 100 girls of OBC category at Nauni University has been sent to central government for approval.

She informed that another hostel for facilitating 105 students of SC category was being constructed at Government College Hamirpur at a cost of Rs 1.66 crore.
