RTI filing in India goes online

The online system would help RTI applicants save both time and resources, ending their dependence on the postal department

New Delhi: Filing queries under the Right to Information (RTI) Act is just a click away. The Central Information Commission (CIC) in India has launched an online system for submission of appeals under RTI.

"The new system was started last week. Now all Internet and tech savvy RTI users can file their complaints and appeals online," a CIC official said on Tuesday.

The RTI Act was passed by parliament in 2005 for promoting transparency and accountability in the functioning of government departments, reports IANS.

Every department has a public information officer (PIO) to whom RTI applications can be submitted. However, if the user does not get the information or receives incomplete information, he can file first an appeal with the appellate authority within the same department.

In case the applicant still remains unsatisfied, he can file a second appeal to their respective information commission.

Now, the applicants will just have to log on to the website of CIC and click on the 'RTI complaints and appeal' link, which will provide them with an application form.

"Filling of the form is very easy. The user has to just fill mandatory fields like name, address, citizenship status, ministry, department or public authority that the appeal is against and whether the complainant is below the poverty line (BPL)," the CIC official said.

The applicant may also fill other details like whether he has applied to any PIO for information related to their complaint and whether the issue at hand is a matter of life or liberty.

"The applicants can even upload documents related to their complaint. The applicants will also be able to check the status of their complaints online," the official added.

The official said that people living outside the national capital and abroad would be benefited the most since the online system would help them save both time and resources, ending their dependence on the postal department.

Respected Sir/Madam

I would appreciate if you could let me know the distance, which should be there between a high tension overhead electric cables and a building nearby. I shall be very much obliged if you could let me know if there is any rule or act meant for this issue.

Sir.
Does this facility now allow us to file even the first RTI query online or do we still have to do that using the pen and paper method.
pls advice.
Thanking you.

How do I get information about Gun license from Arms & Ammunition department for sports license.

This web site does not clearly give the procedure to avail the RTI such as application form, fee involved, time involved etc. The site is not user friendly and may be because of this I could not find the details I wanted as mentioned above.

One should be able to file his form on-line, which appears impossible with the present web site. Kindly re-design the web site.

Thanks

A.N. KESKAR

This is very good practice. We are very much information oriented people in India. I request you please inform me about Geriatric Care service in India by the various state governments in their own state policy. What is the future of the Geriatric Animators who are trained by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, GOI? What about the funds disburse for the welfare od the senior citizen welfare and gives details of grant- in - aid- NGOs.?

A great progress. The usage of internet yet again sets an example of how fast and efficient the system can get. Now hopefully more and more citizens would keenly try to achieve a transparent and accountable system. All the best to us on the road ahead.

That is a fantastic initiative! Query remains about payment of application fee since any application without fee can't be entertained!
