Typo faux pas made laptop price $10

It was a typo faux pas. A low-cost laptop being developed for educational uses by India's government will actually cost US $100 not US $10 as said earlier

New Delhi: It was a typo faux pas and a Zero made all the difference. A low-cost laptop being developed for educational uses by India's government in tandem with two leading educational and research institutions will actually cost US $100 not US $10, as earlier announced by India's Minister of State for Higher Education D Purandeswari.

According to a Ministry spokesperson the goof up in minister's announcement was because of the typo error in the draft of her speech. Besides, the transcript released by the event organisers also quoted the Minister as saying that the government was aiming to offer US $10 (nearly Rs 400) laptops to students.

"The price of the laptop was listed incorrectly in the transcript of a speech that Purandeswari gave at the conference," a Ministry spokesperson clarified.

The Minister had on Tuesday announced that the Indian Institute of Sciences in Bangalore and IIT-Madras were working towards developing a special laptop at a cost of $10 for students to help them excel in studies.

According to the Minister the initiative was aimed at enabling students to make the most out of Information Technology, which has proved to be a catalyst for the country's socio-economic development.

Confusion caused to the reader by the said news item is regretted.
