Andhra to launch Saakshar Bharat Mission

The mission aims to impart functional literacy and numeracy to non-literate

Hyderabad, August 17: The Saakshar Bharat Mission 2012, which aims to impart functional literacy and numeracy to non-literate and non-numerate adults in Andhra Pradesh, will be launched on September 8.

The programme will cover 1.9 crore non-literates in 18 districts of the state where female literacy is below 50 per cent. The state has proposed to cover 75.95 lakh non-literates by 2012 in the first phase, a press release from the Chief Minister's Office said.

It will enable the neo-literate adults to continue their learning beyond basic literacy and promote a learning society by providing opportunities for continuing education, the release said.

Preparation activities like constitution of various committees up to the village panchayat level, identification of adult education centres and selection of village and mandal-level co-ordinators for the programme were currently underway, the officials informed the Chief Minister.

They also said 100 Literacy Centres per district were started in July while the remaining centres would be started in September 2010 to cover 15 lakh non-literates.
