Haryana forms panel for agricultural reforms

It will analyse the factors responsible for decline in farm income and suggest measures to enhance it through market-driven crop diversification

Chandigarh: With a view to bringing in comprehensive policy reforms in the agriculture sector, the Haryana government has constituted Farmers’ Commission. Noted plant breeder and geneticist RS Paroda will head the Commission.

The Commission will analyse the factors responsible for decline in farm income and suggest measures to enhance income of the farmers through market-driven crop diversification, hassle-free regulator and fiscal regime, value addition and agro-processing.

It will also suggest a viable and compatible crop, including horticulture, livestock-fish integrated system and a synergy among agriculture allied sectors. Headquarters of the Commission will be at Hisar.

Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary Agriculture and Vice-Chancellor of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU) will be the official members of the Commission.

The Commission will also examine the current input use efficiency and functioning of delivery system for seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and would also opine the measures for improvement.

Chairman of the Farmers’ Commission RS Paroda has said he will take only one rupee as a token salary.

He has already started working by holding a meeting with Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda here on Thursday and discussing with him various issues concerning the farming community.

Paroda has made significant contributions to strengthen the national agricultural research system in India as well as in Central Asia.

He was instrumental in establishing the Asia Pacific Seed Association (APSA) and an Asia Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI).

He served as Chairman of the Global Forum on Agricultural Research from 1998-2001. He was conferred with Padma Bhushan in 1998 in recognition to his meritorious contributions to agricultural research.
