Haryana Police to buy hi-tech arms for CWG

It has decided to equip itself with modern weapons to ensure fool-proof security during the Commonwealth Games in the national capital region

Chandigarh: In order to ensure fool-proof security during the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in the national capital region, the Haryana Police has decided to equip itself with modern weapons by going in for the purchase of latest arms and ammunition.

“We have decided to buy modern sniper rifles, pistols, cartridges and carbines, besides bulletproof jackets and other equipment at a cost of more than Rs 5 crore,” Haryana Police Modernisation Plan In- charge RC Mishra said.

As many as 75 assault rifles will be imported from Switzerland. Also, on the purchase list are 100 carbines, five hi-tech sniper rifles, 50 AK47 rifles and 12 machine guns.

For interrogation purposes, digital video recorders, digital cameras and other electronic equipment would also be bought. Special training sessions will be conducted for the cops on their usage, Mishra added.

The current purchase of latest arms and ammunition is part of the 2010-11 Modernisation Plan approved by the state government for the police.

Under the plan, Rs 42 crore will be spent in the coming months. In the wake of Games, the Union Government has already released Rs 23 crore to improve the surveillance systems in the state.  

In the coming months, new buildings for the police force will be constructed at Hisar, Newal, Chandigarh, Panchkula and Bhondsi.  The cops will also get alco sensor equipment with wireless printer and pepper ball launchers.

“Since a few events of the Commonwealth Games in October are scheduled to be held in Gurgaon and Faridabad, state Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati has already issued directions to prioritise the modernisation process so that forces are prepared fully for the mega event,” a senior police officer said.
