To help women living with HIV lead a life of dignity and economic independence, a ‘Women and Wealth Project’ (WWP) has been launched in India, China and Cambodia.

Colombo: To help women living with HIV lead a life of dignity and economic independence, a ‘Women and Wealth Project' (WWP) has been launched in India, China and Cambodia.<!--more-->

The project has been launched by the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Regional HIV and Development Programme and Thailand's Population and Community Development Association (PDA).

Under this project, groups of women living with HIV run small, market-savvy social enterprises, with technical and marketing support from PDA, UNDP, international agencies and the private sector.

PDA provided the HIV-positive women with business management training to assist them in developing business plans before establishing their specific enterprises.

"The project provides economic empowerment for the women, individually and collectively, and using a new and fresh approach through the strategy of business to provide them with business skills that they can use in overcoming the barriers associated with living with HIV," PDA Founder and Chairman Mechai Viravaidya said.

As part of WWP, the Cambodian Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (CCW) of the Cambodian People Living with HIV/AIDS Network (CPN+) has set up a garment manufacturing business called ‘Modern Dress Sewing Factory' (MDSF) employing 30 HIV positive women.

In India, the Positive Women Network (PWN+) has established a conceptual design and printing business called ‘Social Light Communications' (SLC) employing two HIV positive women and two men.

In China, Colorful Clouds Yunnan, a female wing of AIDS Care China—a network of people living with HIV—has set up ‘Positive Candle Works' (PCW), a 100 per cent beeswax candle manufacturing factory employing four women.

Each business will be marketed under the common ‘WE' brand (Women Empowered), with the aim to gain market access for their products and services both locally and internationally.

Besides providing regular income and greater economic security for women living with HIV, this project is also focused on establishing a sustainable socially focused business.

The WWP also aims to reduce stigma and discrimination, improving self-esteem and camaraderie among the women, and ensuring ARV adherence. For example, in Cambodia, all the employees of MDSF are on ARV and the new safe working environment allows them to support each other and take their ARV together.

When each business is generating sufficient revenue, the net profits will be pooled into initiating a micro-credit programme specifically designed for people living with HIV and based on PDA's ‘Positive Partnership Project' (PPP).

The PPP, devised by PDA, has been highly successful in Thailand in providing economic opportunities for people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. It is economic empowerment as a means to reducing stigma and discrimination.

Dear Sir,
Two women self-help groups in village Nahara, Distt. Sonepat, Haryana want to start candle manufacturing unit for their social and economic upliftment. These two groups have 29 poor and downtrodden women from 29 families. We, therefore, request you to kindly help us in getting the paraffin wax on concessional rates. Also, if you want to share with us your views, which you think may be of benefit for these women, please send to us and we will be highly grateful for this.
Any information can be sent at wcws.volunteer@gmail.com or you can call us at 09871034451.
Regards, Prem

Besides economic empowerment, these groups can also act as counsellers in the surrounding areas of their work and motivate others, especially women, to insist safe measures while practicing sex lest they may be infected. Live struggling examples like these women groups can go a long way in instilling safeguarding measures for others in the group. Whyn't start a similar group for men too?

Total 19 such groups have been fore\med involving 130 WLHAs and 117 Non-WLHAs. All these groups have Saving account and started monthly savings. These groups are linked with financial Institutes for loan and groups started internal lending.

More interesting is that FIVE groups started Income Generating Activities and the groups are earning profits. More are interested start various activities.

I strongly feel that these MWSHG- IGA making differenc in reducing social stigma about HIV/AIDS and at the same time providing means for women to stand on their own feet.

I strongly recommend that instead of having WLHAs Groups we must have Mixed women groups which helps lot in reducing stigma and increase community acceptance.

Thanks
