Kalam asks farmers not to sell agri land to SEZs

The former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has called on the farmers of the country not to sell their fertile land for any Special Economic Zones (SEZs) or any other economic activity.

New Delhi: The former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has called on the farmers of the country not to sell their fertile land for any Special Economic Zones (SEZs) or any other economic activity.

Instead of acquiring the fertile land from the farmers on government rate, he suggested that the government and industry should make the farmers as their partners in the SEZ projects and give them equity share holding with reference to the overall project cost, according to their land ownership in the market value of today.

The former President also suggested that children of farmers partnering in the SEZ could be trained in value addition tasks connected with SEZ projects.

He said that the country is in the mission of uplifting 220 million people who are living below poverty line (BPL) and sought for the entire development effort should focus towards uplifting the farmers and enable them with capacity to lead a good quality of life.

Hence all the development efforts should be on the process of making them partners, and then only India could bring an inclusive development in the nation.

The former President was also in the favour of a nation where agriculture, industry and service sector work together in symphony.

Since the country is looking for inclusive growth for the one billion population, people need a comprehensive measure of the growth thereby ensuring equitable growth in the society enriching the human dignity.

Participating in the Human Rights Day Celebrations organized by the members of International Institute of Human Rights Society, he said that the injustice that people have to fight today is the societal and economic inequality in various aspects of life for certain percentage of the population.

While SEZ are essential for the country's economic growth, Dr Kalam said that handling land acquisition for SEZ has brought many issues and put the entire growth potential in that intended region into back track.

Thanks to Dr Kalam for his innovative ideas in partnering the people in the economic development. The strategies should be taken into consideration. There are lot of models in this process. One way is to give benefits to the landowners in correlation with the post developmental scenerio of the region and the boost of the market value acquired in that region.
When we suppport for the SEZ growth we must think of our agro industry running out of the hands of the millions of poor agricultural farmers. Within a decade we may face a situation of dependance on the corporate food grains. It will be a disastorus for us, especially Indians will suffer a lot. So we must think, Respect, Protect, Fulfill the needs of all the farmers of this Agricultural Country.
Thanks for the good sugestion Dr Kalam. Let me take this opportunity to call and appeal to the great man of this country to give voices to the Poor Marginalised Farmers of this country, with out them we cannot survive.
One more to Dr Kalam, please reconsider your views on the atomic energy and the development. The world is advocating for the clousure of atomic power stations but the great amn is still for atoms.

What former President Dr. APJ Abdul said is the right option to make people partner in progress and development especially on SEZs. I trust the government will reconsder this process instead of purchasing the cultivable land.
