Laptops for Assam students

More than 19,000 students who secured first division this year would be provided with one laptop computer to promote IT education in the state.

Guwahati, August 17: School students securing first division in Assam will be provided with laptop computers from this year. The laptops will be provided under Anundoram Baruah award meant for first division holders in school certificate examination, which was started by Assam government in 2005.


Assam revenue minister, Bhumidhar Barman said as many as 19,116 students who secured first division this year would be provided with one laptop computer as part of the state government’s move to promote IT education in the state.


“Assam government had started the Anundoram Baruah award provided a desktop computer in order to encourage computer and IT education among our students and from this year we will provide laptop computers,” Barman said.


Under the award started in 2005, as many as 73 thousand students have already been provided with desktop computers. Many of the winners were from rural areas and have helped them to gain computer and IT education.


Barman said the state government was giving much emphasis on computer education in schools as there is a growing need and demand of IT education. He said as per state government’s scheme all government high schools and higher secondary schools have been provided with computers for promotion of IT education.


Barman said that the government is concentrating more on education and skill development of young students and thereby help them establish themselves in various sectors and contribute to the state’s overall development.


The state government have already provided one lakh bi-cycles to poor girl students as part of its girl student welfare scheme.
