The Government of India is planning to enact a law to protect women from sexual harassment at workplace.

New Delhi: Here's a good news for female workforce in India. The Government of India is planning to enact a law to protect women from sexual harassment at workplace.<!--more-->

Stating this, the Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury said that the proposed Bill is based on guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in Vishakha case for prevention of sexual harassment at workplace.

According to Vishakha Guidelines of the Supreme Court, it is the responsibility of the employer to provide safe work environment for the women. It applies to both organised and unorganised sectors and to all categories of women workers.

She further added that it contains provisions for setting up an internal complaints committee and a local complaints committee to look into the complaints of the aggrieved women and recommend suitable action against the respondent.

its good yar

Hi...Went through this website. I wanted to inquire whether there is any law against harassment (NOT sexual harassment, just notorious behavior) of women by rowdy, rogue male colleagues or subordinates.

Is there any department under the Government of Maharashtra?

If you could please provide any pointers, I will highly appreciate that.
Thanks,

Hi,
Very happy to read this. When will this this get implemented? Kindly also look into the  matter of working hours and women working in night shifts, which has an affect on there personal and family life as well.

Welcome in the WDC ministers gescher, like wise, the gov't also protect the interest of working men.Women who misuse the rights against men for there follies. Generally it is fairer sex which gets sympathy from the general public.

Sexual harassment of women at work places is a heinous crime and the culprit should be dealt with by awarding severe punishments prescribed for such acts. The punishment meted out should be given enough publicity to deter others from committing such crimes.Value system is fast deteriorating and somebody will have to bell the cat to restore values by bringing the culprits to book.

It is good to have such laws coming for working women but more effert is required for the women working in unorganised sector.

Dear Editor,
Thank you for sharing the news. I work as a Resource person of the Gender Community-Solution Exchange, which is a UN Country Team initiative for knolwedge manamgement in Inida. We on the Gender Community have completed an Action Group with PRIA by preparing a Gender Policy for all development organizations to engender their work place policies. It is a well reserched document and has been a result of intensive consultation process on the Gender Community of Practice, VANI and Amity Foundation. This document is priced moderately and is available on request.
We have also prepared a Training Module for the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Maharastra, the nodal agency for implementation. The Module has been prepared with a core group of experts from the Department of Women and Child Development, GoMH, the Indian Institute of Public Administration and Human Rights and Law, an NGO. The aim is to sensitize the Government officials towards the Vishakha Judgement guidelines and the need to provide a workplace to women, free of sexual harassment.

Thanks to honble Minister of WCD ,what will be the time limit for its implimentation? pl mention that.

It is really good to know that A law safeguading the women in working places is coming up. A big thanks to Hon.minister Renuka Chowdhary for her innovation. While forming the commitee, there should be women representatives. It can also look into the working hours, night shifts, resting provision and toilet facilities. In a recent incident in Navi Mumbai, there was an incident of a man peeping through the window pane of lady's toilet at railway station. make sure complete safety and security of women

It is good that such laws are made but it is high time ministries look into the serious implementation of the same and go for innovative and compelling ways to make women ,esp. in unorganised sector, aware of such existing laws.

Though the number of legislative measures are there, the working conditions of the women employees are not changed. Hope this new proposed bill basing on the guidelines of Supreme Court that the harassment against women employees may be reduced.

But again there is a small loophole that there may be internal complaints committee and a local complaints committee. With this the justice to the complainent may be a question mark.
One good thing is that this bill is applicable to both organised and unorganised sectors and all categories of women employees.

Considedring the kind of news which appears in dailies on an average, this law is a welcome step towards women empowerment. It should also deter the potential culprits from misbehaving with the fairer sex and think twice before 'owning' them. But, wrong allegations towards male colleagues whom the ladies might not like according to their whims and fancies as often their natural wont, must be safeguarded against, a kind of Harassed Husbands type scenario. But definitely a deterrent generally to letchers.

We are so much happy indeed in knowing the news of a law comming for combating the inhuman sexual harrassment at workplace. The law should incorporate special provisions to safe guard the victims and it gives severe punishment to the management concerned for not helping the victim to get redressal and also to punish the Police those who have not registering complaints of the Victims.

A monitoring mechanism may also be incorported to the effective implimentation of the Law.

Thanks for the Right Steps.
