Medicare on rails pilot project approved

Duronto trains have been chosen for this pilot project for one year in which passengers will have free emergency medical services during journey

New Delhi: Board members of Ministry of Railways have finally given go ahead for the pilot project for having doctors on long distance train and for this pilot all the Duronto train has been chosen for one year.

This service would be a free for the passengers and each train would have one general duty medical officer and one paramedical staff.

The doctor in the train will have advanced equipments like ECG, ophthalmoscope and glucometer for diagnosis. And for treatment they would be having access to equipments like portable suction apparatus, oxygen cylinder, various emergency management disposables and medicines.

To maintain high quality of service railway officials and passengers will closely monitor the pilot project and procedures will be in place for safety of patients.

Train superintendent will be the in-charge of coordination between the ailing passenger and the doctor.
Initial check up by the doctor will be done at the patients berth and depending on the seriousness the patient would be shifted to a designated patient care sick bay.

Also, doctor on board will have a final say on whether the passenger is fit to continue his journey or has to be detrained. After which the train superintendent will be responsible to stop the train at the next station, which has medical facilities so that further treatment can be provided to the passenger.
