"Payments under NREGA are getting delayed"

Government has no mechanism to identify whether a person who has got a job card made under NREGA gets a job in 15 days or not

New Delhi: Rural Development Minister C P Joshi Thursday said the government is aware of delay in payments to workers under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

"We are aware of delays in the payment to workers under NREGA and are trying to find the root cause of it," Rural Development Minister C P Joshi said.

He added, "As of now we do not know any concrete reasons for the delay in payment but we are working on it and the reasons will be known to us soon."

He also said, "At present Ministry does not have any mechanism to identify whether a person who has got a job card made under NREGA getting a job in 15 days or not."

Joshi said the outlay for NREGA was Rs 40,000 crore, but there were complaints of financial irregularities of about Rs 7.32 crore.

NREGA is being implemented in the entire rural area of the country covering 34 States and Union Territories, 614 Districts, 6,096 Blocks and 2.65 lakhs Gram Panchayats.

The Act provides guarantee of employment to all rural households who volunteer to do unskilled manual work in the rural areas.
