Principals for Jharkhand's medical colleges

Two medical colleges have been headless for more than seven & 14 years

Ranchi, August 17: The wait for regular principals for two leading medical colleges of Jharkhand - Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Dhanbad, and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMCH), Jamshedpur - may end soon.

The Raj Bhawan has directed the Health Department to complete the formalities to appoint regular principals and superintendents within a month.

Governor MOH Farook took serious exception to the officials' lackadaisical approach towards the premier medical colleges which do not have regular principals for more than seven years. The department has also been told to set up paramedical boards in both the colleges apart from ensuring due promotions to the qualified teachers.

The PMCH has been functioning without its regular principal since 1996 after the retirement of Dr NDP Sinha. Likewise, MGMCH did not have any principal after the retirement of DN Mukherjee in 2003. Functioning of these colleges has suffered due to lack of regular heads.

At a high-level meeting attended among others by advisors to the Governor, VS Dubey and Wilfred Lakra, chief secretary AK Singh and development Commissioner, Farkook has asked Health Secretary DK Tiwari to take urgent steps for discontinuing the practice of ad-hocism with health facility, which affect one and all in the State. The department has also been asked to set the rules for Health services within a fortnight so as to ensure that none was deprived of the quality service.

With regard to vacant posts in different health centres across the State, the Heath Secretary has been asked to approach the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) to appoint doctors at the earliest.

“In the mean time, the Department can think of roping in retired doctors on contractual basis to facilitate extension of proper healthcare at remote hospitals,” Farook told the Health Secretary.
