Punjab offers free computer course for poor

The programme will be run at SCD Government College in Ludhiana and provide basic computer training of 25 days to 20 needy students every month.

Chandigarh: In an effort to provide computer training to poor and needy students, the Government of Punjab has sponsored a free computer training workshop for students belonging to economically weaker section of the society.

Announcing this, the Punjab Chief Parliamentary Secretary Harish Rai Dhanda said that the group will cover students belonging to Schedule Castes, Schedule Tribes, Other Backward Classes (OBC) and to lower income group.

The programme will be run at SCD Government College in Ludhiana and provide basic computer training of 25 days to 20 needy students every month.

The Political Secretary to Dhanda, PC Garg, said a grant of Rs 64,000 for running the programme in 2008-09 had been released and if the results proved to be useful then more grants would be given to the college for further enhancement of this programme.

He said the basic mission of the programme was to enhance computer literacy among the poor students and to make them capable for earning their livelihood.

The students may enrol themselves for this programme at the computer centre of SCD Government College.

More organisations and institutions would be involved in this mission to make the human resources IT enabled under this capability enhancement programme.

COURSE FOR POOR IS AGREAT STEP IN COMPUTERS, BUT IF PLAN GOES FOR FARMERS THIS WILL BE BIG BOOST IN FARM TECHNOLOGY.
COURSE SHOULD BE ON ALTERNATIVE MONTHS TO FARMERS AND POOR. THERE IS NO BIG DIFFERERCE BETWEEN TWO CLASSES.

IT IS A VISIONARY STEP OF MR. DHANDA

This is an interesting scheme offered by the Govt of Punjab.

However, would have been more valuable if students are provided computer training that would assist them in getting employment and a better economic opportunity.

Cisco has been partnering with over 25 state/UT governments since the past 8 years in offering the Cisco Networking Academy (www.cisco.com/asiapac/academy) that teaches students networking and other information technology-related skills, preparing them for jobs as well as for higher education in the new knowledge economy fields.

Such efforts should be lauded by one and all of the ICT4D community as it would go a long way in bridging the digital divide and perhaps more importantly instilling in wider populace the belief that computers are not an elitist thing at all and they would also feel part of the growing e-literates army of India who could occupy the next seats in Infosys and all other big MNCs. More state governments should follow suit and perhaps Punjab can usher in a new Blue revolution.
