Ranchi University plans to hook on NKN

All its key departments and offices would be linked with high-speed broadband facility to figure on the National Knowledge Network Programme

Ranchi: The Ranchi University and its various departments will soon be linked to the World Wide Web.

The move to connect all its administrative offices and academic departments with high speed Internet facility is being considered as a part of the Ranchi University’s plan of getting figured on the upcoming National Knowledge Network (NKN) programme.

The NKN is a state-of-the-art multi-gigabit pan-India network for providing a unified high speed network backbone for all knowledge related institutions in the country. It is an ambitious scheme mooted by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD).

Officiating Vice-Chancellor of the university VP Sharan said if everything went as per the plan, all the departments would be connected with high speed broadband links by the end of next month.

“We have proposed to invest Rs 40 lakh on the first phase of the project that envisaged connecting all post graduate departments and other vital units of the university with broadband link,” he added.

Officials said the MHRD has offered to bear 75per cent of the total project cost, while the rest expenses will be incurred by the university.

“We expect another installment of fund early next fiscal to bring the entire university premises under the wireless-fidelity (wi-fi) and virtual classroom supported by video-enabled interactive teaching facility,” added Sharan.

Apart from post graduate departments, placement cell, data processing centre, Dean Offices, Basic and Applied Science departments, guest house and academic staff college along with Journalism Department would have the Internet facility.

The present system would support simultaneous operation of over 1000 computers, which will be inter-linked with high capacity server.

High class Connectivity implemeation by HCL

HCL is involded in making the NKN network across the IITs and some high profile institution across the country.
HCl can be trusted for making such implentation because of its huge networking experts and team to deliver the same.......

Cheaper solution available for NKN

TSPs (Telephone Service Providers) can already provide this facility to all their subscribers. They can provide broadband connectivity up to 2 mbps, which is usually more than adequate. In addition over the same wire pair they can provide up to 8 mbps using ADSL2+.

If the usage requirements are carefully worked out, a suitable internet connectivity using ADSL2+ BB or point-to-point leased line to TSP POP of adequate bandwidth to meet all requirements of the university, can be worked out. This will give them very effective high speed connectivity to the world wide web which is the international knowledge highway.

If they want connectivity to a central national knowledge hub and have connectivity to share information with other peer universities, even that can be worked out through a p2p based inter-university INTRANET.

I am afraid too much is being made of the multi-Giagabit per second connectivity mooted in the NKN. I have already indicated the folly of it all in earlier posts on NKN.

The MHRD should wake up. They are being taken for a ride by consultants and being led up the garden path into committing massive unwarranted investments from the National Exchequer built up with tax payers contributions.
