UN to engage municipalities for poverty reduction

UNDP is organising the 6th global forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty from March 26-28 to engage municipalities on local plans of action in reducing poverty through fostering local democracy.

Geneva: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is organising the 6th global forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty (WACAP) from March 26-28 to engage municipalities on local plans of action in reducing poverty through fostering local democracy.<!--more-->

The global forum focuses on building the capacities of municipalities in addressing poverty through a structured exchange of experiences and the establishment of partnerships among cities as well as with a broad range of key development actors.

This forum is a response by UNDP and the City of Athens to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's call to intensify efforts in order to meet the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

One of the innovative outcomes expected from the meeting in Athens is the adoption by participating municipalities of time-bound and quantified local roadmaps that will determine targets to be reached on various facets of poverty.

These include hunger, access to primary education, water and sanitation, child mortality, maternal mortality, diseases (particularly HIV/AIDS) and gender gaps.

Numerous municipalities are taking part, alongside UN institutions including UNDP, UNESCO, FAO, UNEP, ILO, WHO, the World Bank and other major development institutions.

We would like to appreciate such kind of move by the UN for engaging Municipalities by their capacity building in the poverty reduction and in a way community empowerment programme. This is a challenging job which entails education as an important and effective component especially education for sustainable development.

I look for active and positive participation of Municipalities in this meet and wish small municipalities like Patna Municipal Corporation, Bihar, India were also participate in this meet and get benefited.

We further appreciate sharing of outcome of this conference.

Dear Sir,
The UN has decided to engage municipalities for poverty reduction. This is a very good initiative taken by the UN to reduce poverty or to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The UN should take every step coming from any part of the world or from any person to end poverty. However, I suggest the UN to advise every employee of UNDP,UNESCO,FAO, ILO, UNEP, WHO, the World Bank and other major development institutions to work for ending poverty and hunger at least in the village where the said employee was born. Every employee should ensure primary education to every resident, piped drinking water and flush toilets in every household and Kharanja in every street of the said village and also ensure that every resident in the said village of the employee learns "Pranayam" so that every resident remains healthy in his or her life and never falls ill.
So far as funding is concerned this can be done by the UN.
I hope the UN authorities will take note of this suggestion to end poverty. If the employee was not born in a village then he should pay attention to his or her ancestral village.
